SZA has opened up about owing Beyoncé a significant share of the publishing rights to her hit song SOS, and surprisingly, the music legend has never asked her for anything in return.

In an Instagram comment that caught fans’ attention, SZA casually mentioned that she owes Beyoncé “half my publishing” for interpolating lyrics from Listen, a song Beyoncé recorded for the 2006 film Dreamgirls. The SOS title track includes the line, “And I cried and cried / Said what’s on my mind,” which mirrors Beyoncé’s original lyrics, “And I’ve tried and tried / To say what’s on my mind.”

SZA made the comment under a video by influencer Zuhaila Jama, who had jokingly pointed out how many writing credits appear on Beyoncé’s songs. The singer responded, “I literally owe her half my publishing off interpolation alone on SOS and she never pressed me lmao.” She added that Beyoncé is “a generous QUEEN,” making it clear she holds nothing but admiration for her.

The track SOS serves as the opener for SZA’s Grammy-winning 2022 album of the same name. According to Genius, the song was written by SZA, Gabriel Samuel Hardeman, Rob Bisel, and Jay Versace, with production by Bisel and Versace. It also features a sample from “Until I Found the Lord (My Soul Couldn’t Rest)” by the Gabriel Hardeman Delegation, which explains why Hardeman is credited as a writer.

Meanwhile, Listen was written by Beyoncé along with Scott Cutler, Henry Krieger, and Anne Preven. Despite the obvious similarities and official credit, SZA made it clear Beyoncé never made any demands for compensation or recognition.

This isn’t the first time SZA has expressed her deep respect for Beyoncé. In a February 2024 interview with E! News, she shared that she once felt too intimidated to even introduce herself. “I can’t speak unless she wants to speak, in my brain, because I don’t want to bother her,” she said. “She looked so peaceful and beautiful… she’s a masterclass on poise, grace, artistry, beauty, and kindness.”

She did, however, get a moment with Jay-Z. “Jay-Z did speak to me. I was so grateful,” she said, calling him and Beyoncé her “favorite people.” Even as her own star continues to rise, it’s clear SZA still finds herself in awe of the power couple.
