Let’s talk beer. But, let’s get something out of the way first… drinks are not gendered. There’s no beer that makes you “more chill,” just like there’s no cocktail that makes you “more feminine.” We like what we like, and that’s the end of it. Still, beer has long been branded as a boys’ club beverage. But here’s the gag: it started with us.

Women were the original brewers. We’re talking ancient Mesopotamia, where beer wasn’t just a pastime, it was nutrition. Beer was dense, hearty, and essential. Women brewed it, sold it, and sustained families with it. The ancient Sumerian goddess Ninkasi was literally the deity of brewing. And for generations, women used beer-making as a way to earn money and hold space in a patriarchal world.

Fast forward to today, women are embracing beer again, but this time with more choice, more knowledge, and (honestly) more flavor. And while taste is personal, there are some beers that consistently show up when women talk about what they actually like to drink.

According to a 2023 study, these are the top 10 beers by popularity amongst women:

Dos Equis — 37% popularity

Corona Extra — 39%

Corona — 40%

Heineken — 41%

Budweiser — 41%

Stella Artois — 42%

Blue Moon — 43%

Corona Light — 43%

Samuel Adams — 47%

Guinness — 50%

The popularity of these brands is about more than marketing. It’s about taste, versatility, and a generation of women ordering what they actually enjoy, no matter who’s watching.

Here’s a bonus: beer can be good for you. A 2020 Italian study found that women who drank a pint once or twice a week had a lower risk of heart disease than those who didn’t. This due to the phenols, which are natural antioxidants found in beer. Hops also help with inflammation, and the bitter acids in beer have been known to relieve chronic pain. Women have been using hops for centuries as a healing herb.

So this National Beer Day, drink what you like. Whether it’s Guinness or Blue Moon, in a pint glass or a chilled bottle. Raise one for the women who brewed before us and the ones who are reshaping the beer narrative today. Because beer isn’t just for boys. It never was.
